Socio-scientific collections form irreplaceable part of the Central Slovakia Museum fund.
They document the past of the town of Banská Bystrica and of the region of Banská Bystrica. Into
the socio-scientific fund there belong the archaeological,
historical, artistic, numismatic, and
ethnographic objects. In the archaeology section there are placed the objects representing
various cultures from the area of Slovakia from the prehistory to the modern history. The
history section contains one of the biggest weaponry collections in Slovakia, crafts’ artefacts,
the things related to mining, a collections of ceramics, glass, flags etc.
Fine arts are
represented by sacral sculptures and paintings; there are the portraits of the significant
personalities and vedutas, which depict Banská Bystrica and other towns the way they looked like
in the past. In numismatic section there are Roman coins, medieval and modern coins, but also
medals. Ethnography section is represented by folk textile, various types of clothes and
costumes, ceramics, the things of everyday need, folk fine art – glass paintings, sculptures
etc.
Socio-scientific collections are presents in the resident exposition “Central Slovakia from primeval ages to 20. century” and situated in Thurzo's House.
Natural scientific department of the Museum was founded in 1972 and since1989 it has resided in the historical listed building of Tihányis’ manor house in Radvaň. The Museum regularly provides, besides the possibility of visiting the permanent exposition called Nature of Central Slovakia, its own professional exhibitions. In the audio-visual hall of the Museum there are being screened the films for pupils and students, there take place some lectures, specialized seminars for teachers, screening of the dia-programs and discussions on various topics concerning the issues of nature protection.
Exposition “Nature of the Central Slovakia” is, according to the
topics, into 8 show rooms and each of them provides, by means of represented animals, plants,
rocks, minerals and fossils, the picture about the nature of 8 units of former Central Slovakia
region. 2400 exhibits, plenty of photographs and schemes present the typical samples of the most
significant natural and artificial ecosystems. Visual indications of the relations among the
particular elements of the ecological systems enable the visitors to understand the basic
principals of their function. The purpose of the exposition is not only to help its visitors
learn to distinguish even less known kinds of rocks, minerals, plants, and animals but also to
extend the knowledge in the field of ecology and nature protection. The exposition is designed
for all scale of the environmental issues from the presentation of species diversity, protected
areas characteristics to the samples of the natural environment devastation sources. The
exposition room dedicated to the nature of Tatras offers the possibility to play the voices of
the exhibited animals.
